Law enforcement veteran Michael Letts wonders what kind of leadership Mayor Muriel E. Bowser truly provides.

Even though the GOP has voted to dismantle a police reform law within the District, the Washington DC police are continuing to feel the after-effects with the departure of a much-respected police chief.

Robert J. Contee III has retired from the force, looking to move into a top-level position within the FBI, according to the Washington Post. This is the latest high-end departure from the city, with the troubled administration of Mayor Muriel E. Bowser getting the blame.

Bowser noted that the departures were “unexpected,” but remained confident. “Every season of being mayor of a big city requires tough decisions, requires discipline, requires you to always be recruiting great people and putting them in place,” Bowser said. “I’m fully aware of the number of changes that we have … but the process that we go through to have good people in place, that continues. And it will continue in this case as well.”

That said, the people that left were quite noteworthy. Along with Conlee, a number of agency directors resigned, along with two deputy mayors.

While some may wonder just what kind of blame Bowser should take, one thing that didn’t help was the previous police reform law. It put a number of restrictions on the duties of officers, including making disciplinary records public, as well as preventing the use of riot gear and tear gas. And keep in mind this comes after riots that have taken place in the city over the past few years.

While Democrats continue to question the effect of the law, some are wondering what Bowser and DC officials will do to make up for the loss in officers. With us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt.
