Woman steals cop car after going out for drinks with the officer | Law Enforcement Today

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL - On Monday, March 31st, a woman was arrested after allegedly stealing a City of Miami police officer's unmarked police vehicle.

According to Local10, the arrest warrant states that 27-year-old Andrea Marie Assaf and the police officer, who live in the same apartment building in the Dadeland area, went out for drinks on Sunday, March 30th. The two do not reside in the same apartment.

Deputies said that the officer dropped her off at their apartment building, and at some point, Assaf, who is a leasing agent at the building, entered his apartment unit using her key fob and stole the keys to his police-issued vehicle. The arrest report states that Assaf then texted the officer a photo of herself driving the police vehicle along Southwest 72nd Avenue.

Deputies said the officer texted her back, telling her "not to drive the vehicle." Authorities said she later returned the car to the parking garage. The arrest report states that the officer went to Assaf's apartment unit to get his keys back, at which time the woman threw the keys on the floor and threw her phone at the officer, striking him in the back of his head, causing a small cut.

Assaf was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Monday, March 31st, on charges of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, grand theft of a vehicle, and battery on a police officer. As of Monday afternoon, Assaf was being heled at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $8,500 bond.

In a separate incident, a man has been charged after a Bedford Park, Illinois police vehicle and a USPS truck were stolen, leading to a crash on Wednesday, March 19th. According to ABC7, 36-year-old Miguel Alvarado has been charged with aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle and two counts of aggravated reckless driving.

The incident began when police said a Bedford Park police vehicle was stolen while officers were responding to a call for service around 2:45 p.m. in the 6800-block of South Archer Road. Authorities said that Alvarado allegedly gained access to one of the patrol cars and drove away.

The vehicle was later found unattended near 97th Place and Avon Avenue in Chicago Ridge. Bridgeview police said the suspect left the Bedford Park police car after it became disabled. Authorities said he then located a U.S Postal Service truck and forcibly stole the vehicle from a postal worker.

Following the carjacking, the suspect then drove northbound on Roberts Road before hitting a vehicle occupied by a family of three, including a mother and her two children, ages four and seven. The two children remain hospitalized. The mother is OK and the USPS worker is also doing OK.

Bridgeview police said additional charges against Alvarado are expected given there were multiple police agencies involved.
