Officer thrown from fleeing vehicle and seriously injured while onlookers laugh and post video to TikTok | Law Enforcement Today

BEAUMONT, TX - Two women were placed under arrest in Beaumont, TX on Friday, January 3  after a Beaumont police officer was thrown from a vehicle while attempting to stop one of the suspects from fleeing. The officer sustained a head injury. Troublingly, the officer was swarmed by laughing, gawking passersby who filmed the fallen officer and posted it to TikTok.

As reported by KFDM, at approximately 1:40 p.m. officers were summoned to a disturbance outside a bar and attempted to detain one of the two suspects who fled from the scene in a convertible. The BPD officer attempted to jump onto the vehicle to stop the driver when she accelerated, throwing him from the vehicle.

Jamaysha Butler, 28, identified by authorities as the driver, was arrested several minutes later at her home after leading officers on a brief foot pursuit. She is now facing charges of Intoxication Assault and Evading Detention, each intensified with the enhancement of causing serious bodily injury to a peace officer. The second suspect involved in the initial disturbance, Melissa Bell, 22, was arrested separately. During her arrest, Bell reportedly kicked and kneed Officer S. Stevenson as he walked her to a patrol vehicle.

A video posted online and reported on by The New York Post showed the unidentified officer hurled from the vehicle and surrounded onlookers with one yelling, “Yo, yo! Police! Step on my man!”

The outlet reported that both women have prior arrests on their criminal record. Bell has been arrested in the past for public intoxication, resisting arrest, interference with public duties, and assault on a peace officer and has outstanding warrants the Beaumont PD said.

In a statement posted to social media, the department said the officer’s head injury was serious. In comments to KFDM, a spokesman confirmed the officer was transported to a Houston area hospital suffering from a brain bleed. He is listed in serious but stable condition.
