In the first chapter, Letts writes about a tragic shooting of a police officer, Officer Fitzgerald, of the Temple University police in Philadelphia, PA.

OFC Fitzgerald intervened in a carjacking but an 18-year-old perpetrator pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the head and torso area at point blank range several times.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said he was “heartbroken and outraged” by the death and pledged, “The city will continue to work with Temple Police to support them during this difficult time.” Nice words; that's what politicians have to do - say what's expected of them at the appropriate moment. In Kenney’s city, robberies in which perpetrators used guns are up 60 percent, property crimes more than 30 percent, and commercial burglaries are a staggering 50 percent. Overall violent crime is surging and robberies have more than doubled.
