Five-year-old answers door with loaded handgun while police were serving a subpoena | Law Enforcement Today | lawenforcementtoday.com

BATTLE CREEK, MI - On Saturday, January 25th, a cadet with the Battle Creek Police Department (BCPD) disarmed a five-year-old who was standing at the front door with a loaded handgun while serving a subpoena.

According to Woodtv, BCPD said that the cadet was serving a subpoena on Inn Road off of E Columbia Avenue around 9:40 a.m. when a five-year-old answered the door with a kitchen knife. The cadet called an officer for backup and asked the child to have an adult come to the door. However, when the child returned, they were armed with a loaded handgun.

Responding officers found two men and a woman inside of the home. All three were taken into custody for questioning. Authorities said that due to the handgun and "deplorable conditions of the home," five children who range in age from eight years to six months were turned over to Child Protective Services. One of the children was taken to the hospital due to health concerns.

The father of the woman who was taken into custody said that his daughter was living with the father of one of the kids along with the man's friend. He said the situation at home was difficult, with his daughter calling the police earlier when she was abused in her home. He said, "She was a single mother with five kids trying to do the best that she can after what happened with her baby's daddy throwing all the kids' stuff out and everything and having to scrape through the snow to find them. They tore the house up on the inside, smashed everything. Everything was smashed on the floor."

Police confirmed that a man was arrested at the home for several suspected crimes including a domestic violence-related case on January 12th. While the woman's father said more should have been done to remove his daughter and the children from the home to safer place, he is focusing on gaining custody of his grandchildren. He said, "I love my daughter, I love my grandkids. I want to see everyone back together as a family, that's all."

In a separate incident, a man carrying weapons and claiming to be a military official was arrested Thursday, January 23rd, after entering a Seattle High School and saying he was there to "protect the children." According to KOMO News, the suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody for criminal impersonation, burglary, harassment, and possession of weapons at the school.

Police were called to the school around 1:30 p.m. after reports of an unknown male on the first floor of the building refusing to leave. School security reported that the man claimed to be affiliated with the U.S. Court of Appeals and was carrying handcuffs in his back pocket. Officers on scene then learned that the man had threatened to arrest people who tried to stop him.

A police incident report states that the suspect was wearing a plate carrier with a holstered taser and had chemical agent in his pocket. He also displayed a badge labeled "Air Combat Command." Without prompting, he stated he was there to "protect the children," alleging the principal had criminal charges from Evergreen.

A search of his belongings revealed a notebook containing a plastic card from the "United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces" with his name, along with writings in English and Korean, including the phrase "mass casualty." His backpack contained a drone, caltrops, recorder, radiation scanner, and other items.

Authorities with the Seattle School District reported that the suspect claimed the "Federal RICO act" permitted his presence at the school, a claim they denied. Security personnel said the suspect ignored multiple requests to leave and threatened to arrest them, attempting to handcuff the vice principal.

The suspect was taken to the North Precinct and later booked into King County Jail. Authorities are seeking additional charges and recommending that the case be referred to the Mental Health Court.
